Abstract:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral vestibular disorder, which severely affects patients’ quality of life. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that the incidence of sleep disorders and BPPV has increased with increasing age. And significant correlations exist between the two conditions. A review of relevant literature has demonstrated that sleep disorders are closely associated with the occurrence, progression, and prognosis of BPPV. Sleep disorders may trigger BPPV and also increase the incidence of residual dizziness and the risk of recurrence following canalith repositioning procedures. Therefore, clinicians should concurrently address patients’ sleep issues during the diagnosis and treatment of BPPV. This review aims to systematically elucidate a link and the common risk factors between the two conditions, and analyze the mechanisms and clinical significance of the two conditions. It seeks to provide a foundation for identifying high-risk populations and developing comprehensive treatment approaches, ultimately aiming to improve the prognosis and enhance the quality of life for such patients.
